About

UAS@UCLA is the premier undergraduate aerial robotics team at UCLA. Our student-run team designs, manufactures, and tests cutting-edge drone hardware and software. As a member of UAS, students will work to develop controls algorithms for navigating complex landscapes, design and 3D model drone designs, and work on cunning edge research in the field. UAS at UCLA consists of three major projects: the AUVSI competition, the NASA AVIATA Research Challenge, and the IEEE competition (not affiliated with IEEE at UCLA). In the AUVSI competition students work to develop a search and rescue drone that navigates to different waypoints, avoids obstacles, locates vision targets, and deploys autonomous vehicles on the ground. This competition consists of over 70 other colleges and the club has participated in it since its inception. The NASA AVIATA Challenge is a challenge that UAS submitted a research proposal and received funding for, for the development of an experimental multi drone system. Students are currently working on flying 8 drones all connected together to one central frame as one entity. Each connected drone has the ability to attach and detach from the frame while in midair, allowing the platform to remain in flight even with only 6 of 8 drones attached. This allows the platform to fly indefinitely as new drones can be swapped in as batteries run low. UAS has currently implemented such a system with 4 drones, without docking, and is working on upping the system to 8. The IEEE competition is a software based competition where students work to develop controls algorithms for navigating and mapping a miniaturized cityscape, while tracking moving obstacles. This is a great software/research competition for very interested members to pursue.

UAS provides its members a unique way to immediately get a hands on learning experience with innovative technology. We let new members immediately take on major responsibilities in our major projects, giving them the chance to contribute as much as they want, and learn by doing. If you’re interested in designing drones, want to pursue fascinating software control problems, or just want to see some super amazing things fly, this is the club for you!
